At Mahalaxmi Crop science Private Limited, our research scientists are focusing and adopting a multi-disciplinary effort that is driven by breeding to evolve hybrid and inbred varieties of our mandate field crops and vegetables that would cater the future need of farming community with value added traits.
Mahalaxmi Seeds is driven by intensive research in breeding and developing the best seed of varieties and hybrids. Its crop experts are constantly at work to create products having resistance against major pests and diseases, higher per day productivity, consumer’s preference and high yielding ability.
R & D This is the backbone of the company and encompasses both “Field and Laboratory Research Activities”. Hybrid seed R&D is done by the scientists at Idar while variety development work is undertaken at Idar. The Department is headed by a Senior Director Research who is a distinct Plant Breeder. Crop Breeders assisted by Jr. Breeders and Research Assistants work on specific crop or at times a group of crops. The outcome of the research (Hybrid/Variety) is tested by staff of the outfit called Product Placement staff that tests the evolved hybrids/varieties under different agro-climatic zones for their performance.
Besides testing on farmers fields, the company also got its testing stations at following locations:
- Idar (Gujrat)
- Karnal (Haryana)
- Jaipur (Rajasthan)
- Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh)
Foundation Seed Department
The parents for the hybrids developed by the R & D scientists are multiplied by the staff of this department. Maintenance breeding and thus ensuring 100% genetic purity of the parents is the first important responsibility of this department which they do in close collaboration with the crop breeders. The other important task is to multiply sufficient seed quantity of the parents, as indeed by the seed production department.
Seed Production Department
The seed production activity is done on farmer’s fields. All agronomic operations, as recommended by the company staff, are performed by the farmer (Seed Grower). The seed grower and the company sign an agreement for seed production. Hybrid seed production activity is mainly in Gujrat and Andhra Pradesh while varieties seed is produced for the company by the farmers of Gujrat, Rajasthan, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. While the task of seed production is done by the seed growers, the company provides through its staff, basic seed, and technology. The seed thus produced under a written agreement is brought back to Mahalaxmi Seeds Processing plants at Idar for further processing and packing.
Seed Processing, Packing & Warehouse & Seed Dispatch Department: Seed processing, treatment with prescribed chemicals to make the seed free from diseases and pests is done by the company staff at the two seed processing & ware house facilities at Idar and Ahmedabad.
Quality Assurance Department
The prescribed seed standards by the Government and above it prescribed by the International Seed testing Association (ISTA) which is Switzerland based organization are ensured through specific seed tests. A competent group of Seed Analysts perform the prescribed field inspections and lab. Tests to ensure high seed standards. Regular Grow out Tests (GOTs) are conducted before sending the seed to the markets for sale.
Sales and Marketing Department
The packed seed of given seed standards are sold by a strong “Distributors & Dealers” network throughout the country. Mahalaxmi such sale network consists of over 1,000 sale points. The staff of the company performs market sales promotion activities and also gives the required technological input to the farmers through printed literature and also through personal contacts and group meetings.
