Our research scientists at Mahalaxmi Crop Science Private Limited undertake a thorough and multi-disciplinary approach based on breeding to develop hybrid and inbred varieties of selected field crops and vegetables. This initiative aims to provide for the future needs of the agricultural community through added value traits.
Mahalaxmi Seeds has set for itself the rigorous research of breeding for developing outstanding seed varieties and hybrids. Our crop specialists are working tirelessly to develop such products that would resist the crucial pests and diseases, have improved consumer acceptability and productivity, and offer high yield potential.
Research and Development form the backbone of the company, which involves field and laboratory investigations. Research and development on hybrid seeds are carried out in Idar by scientists, whereas development of varieties is also done at the same site. Senior Director of Research, a renowned Plant Breeder, heads the department. Crop Breeders are assisted by Junior Breeders and Research Assistants, depending on specific crops or occasionally on a group of crops. The Product Placement team evaluates the performance of hybrids and varieties obtained from research in different agro-climatic zones.
The company also tests on the farmers’ field besides running testing stations in four states-Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh- for comprehensive testing and adaptability of seeds in different environmental conditions. These research interventions consequently provide high-performing seeds needed by farmers from various regions.

Mahalaxmi Seeds is driven by intensive research in breeding and developing the best seed of varieties and hybrids. Its crop experts are constantly at work to create products having resistance against major pests and diseases, higher per day productivity, consumer’s preference and high yielding ability.
R & D This is the backbone of the company and encompasses both “Field and Laboratory Research Activities”. Hybrid seed R&D is done by the scientists at Idar while variety development work is undertaken at Idar. The Department is headed by a Senior Director Research who is a distinct Plant Breeder. Crop Breeders assisted by Jr. Breeders and Research Assistants work on specific crop or at times a group of crops. The outcome of the research (Hybrid/Variety) is tested by staff of the outfit called Product Placement staff that tests the evolved hybrids/varieties under different agro-climatic zones for their performance.

The parents for the hybrids developed by the R & D scientists are multiplied by the staff of this department. Maintenance breeding and thus ensuring 100% genetic purity of the parents is the first important responsibility of this department which they do in close collaboration with the crop breeders. The other important task is to multiply sufficient seed quantity of the parents, as indeed by the seed production department.
The seed production for hybrids is conducted on farmers’ fields, following company-recommended agronomic practices. Hybrid seed production occurs in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, while variety seeds are grown in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh. The company ensures genetic purity by providing basic seed and technology, supporting farmers throughout the process.
The prescribed seed standards by the Government and above it prescribed by the International Seed testing Association (ISTA) which is Switzerland based organization are ensured through specific seed tests. A competent group of Seed Analysts perform the prescribed field inspections and lab. Tests to ensure high seed standards. Regular Grow out Tests (GOTs) are conducted before sending the seed to the markets for sale.
The packed seed of given seed standards are sold by a strong “Distributors & Dealers” network throughout the country. Mahalaxmi such sale network consists of over 1,000 sale points. The staff of the company performs market sales promotion activities and also gives the required technological input to the farmers through printed literature and also through personal contacts and group meetings.
